Six Years Old!

Happy sixth anniversary, Meeting Place!  You’ve come a long way, baby… :)

Last Saturday we enjoyed a wonderful anniversary concert performed by the Samuel Evans Band.  I had only heard them online prior to that evening, and wow, they were fantastic!  They do a great mix of really driven sounds as well as some tender ballads, and lots of interesting takes on popular praise and worship songs, too.

If you missed the concert, make sure to stop out for our next event: Chris Castle in concert July 18th at 7pm!  Chris is a folk/Americana singer- songwriter from Peru, Ohio.

Over the past eighteen months, Castle has shared stages with some amazing acts, including: Junior Brown, Chris Hillman (the Byrds), Tommy Ramone (the Ramones), Will Kimbrough, Jonathan Edwards, the Wood Brothers, Richard Shindell, Jeff Black, and the everybodyfields.

He has released two albums, the second of which was recorded in August of 2008 at the home studio of Levon Helm (the Band, Bob Dylan).

Castle has spent the last two years, touring; Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maine, and New Hampshire extensively. He prefers to play intimate venues such as coffeehouses and house concerts, when possible.

Enjoy the Farmer’s Market This Year

We had a great time at our first ever Farmer’s Market on Saturday!  Lima has been hosting the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings for years now, but this year is the first year The Meeting Place on Market joined.  We offered brewed coffee, coffee beans, pies, yeast breads, and quick breads.  Other vendors offered fruit, vegetables, jams, I bought some home made maple syrup, baked goods, and more.

The Farmer’s Market is also going to start this week on Thurdays, from 3-6 pm.  Great timing to stop by after work on Thursday!

This year especially, in the midst of economic concerns, the Farmer’s Market can help you slash your grocery budget, AND you are supporting local farmers and businesses, so the money they earned is re-invested back into this community, instead of being flung across the world to disassociated investors.

So, get some quality, healthy food, save money, and re-invest into your local community.  The best of all worlds!

Barbara Spurgeon Art Exhibit Opens Tonight – With Musician Paul Reiser

THIS Friday, May 29th, 7 – 9 pm, join us for the opening reception of Barbara Spurgeon’s art exhibit. Paul Reiser will serenade with jazz music during the artist Meet ‘n Greet.  (Due to this event, Open Mike Night will only run from 9 pm – 10 pm.)

Home grown artist Barbara Spurgeon returns to Lima after living in Texas for 25 years. Barbara is a graduate of Elida H.S. and Ohio State
University. Allen County trees and wild flowers are a favorite subject matter of Barbara’s water color paintings, but she paints other things as well. Barbara does teach watercolor classes, gives demonstrations, and does do custom painting. Barbara is a member of the Lima Area Watercolor Society and regularly participates in their art exhibits (St. Rita’s Hospital, 2nd floor). Barbara enjoys home decorating and likes to talk about home repair projects, floor covering, and wall treatment.  She also cooks a pretty good soup.

Her artwork will be on display at The Meeting Place on Market May 29th through July 2nd.

Another Veteran

This is the third installment in our series about five year veteran employees of the Meeting Place.  This week our spotlighted employee is Laura Hesler, who has worked here since she was sixteen.

Laura says she decided to work at The Meeting Place because her older sister (that would be moi) liked working there so much.   She too has made lots of good friends while working here.

Laura’s favorite menu items are the Cheddar Apple Turkey, served on a spinach wrap, and the Iced Chai Latte.  Her best memory is of the five year anniversary party last May.  (That seems to be a lot of people’s favorite, I’ve noticed.  That was one fun party.)

Thank you, Laura, for all your time here and your creativity and hard work!

Meet Ashley

In a second installment of our series highlighting our five year or more veteran employees, we’d like to introduce Ashley Stump, who, like Elaine, has been here since the beginning.

Ashley had previously worked with Mtg. Place manager Kevin Brogee at Allan Nott, and when he offered her a position at his new business, she thought it sounded like a fun and interesting opportunity.  Ashley has become indispensable over the years, and knows how to do just about everything around here.  In fact, she is currently overseeing the new Meeting Place kiosk at the Heart Institute!

Ashley’s favorite memory is of our five year anniversary party last year, and her favorite menu item is the Mediterranean Salad.

We want to thank Ashley for all the different roles she has filled over the years, and all the new employees she has helped to train!  From doing the schedule to inventing delicious weekly specials to handling the ordering, you have remained an invaluable member of The Meeting Place family!

Drawings, Paintings, and Prints Art Exhibit May 1st – May 28th

Drawings, Paintings, and Prints Art Exhibit May 1st – May 28th

Works by David Adams and Joan Crawford-Barnes goes on display Friday, May 1 with an opening reception from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Meeting Place on Market in Lima, Ohio. The show will run through May 29.

Adams is a self-taught cartoonist and print-maker. He draws the comic strip The Bean Family for the City of Lima’s utility bills to raise money for the City Parks Capital Improvement Fund. “I have been a Boy Cartoonist since the 5th grade.” He also exhibits linoleum and wood relief prints in regional art shows, reviews movies, and serves on Lima City Council.

Ever since her Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania childhood, Joan Crawford-Barnes wanted to draw and paint, however marriage, children and other life activities left very little time until retirement. On the other hand and since she hung up her “shingle” – Joan took to the brush like a duck in water. As past president of the Lima Watercolor Society, she has attended workshops and studied with local and internationally known artists. Her work has appeared in shows at various galleries in Ohio and Michigan, and solo exhibits. In addition, she also holds associations with the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Wassenberg Art Center, Art/Space Lima and the Birmingham Watercolour Society, UK, and a contributing writer for the Art-to-Art Palette.

Her passion is color. “When I see beautiful color I want to paint it.” After a trip to the Louvre in Paris, France, she began to paint in oils. “I enjoy the works of the old Masters and I am inspired when viewing their works in museums.” However, due to its speed and the vibrancy of the watercolor palette, she began using watercolors for her paintings and has embraced it ever since.

Joan also enjoys the Art of Iconography and has painted many religious Icons in the Russian Byzantine Tradition. She has studied this art with the Prosopon School of Iconography taught by Master Iconographer, Vladislav Andreyev and apprentices for the past five years. Her Iconography can be viewed by appointment in her home. For more information, visit her website at: http://www.joanbarnes-wc.com/
