Spend a Day Exploring Downtown Lima, Ohio
Dine, shop and play in downtown Lima – a fun, easy, inexpensive getaway any time of the year. Below we list one way to spend a day enjoying its cultural vibrancy and diversity.
Morning
Start out the morning with a white chocolate caramel mocha and a breakfast egg wrap at gourmet coffee house and cafe, The Meeting Place on Market. While you’re there, stroll through the restaurant and admire the artwork displayed on the walls. Each month a different local artist displays his/her original art, also available for purchase. Open M-F, 7:30 am, Saturday 9 am. Closed Sunday.
While you’re in the mood for art, stop at ArtSpace in its historic building on the Town Square. They have two art galleries that host professional art exhibits. Make sure to visit their Gallery Shop, with original, hand-crafted artist creations in glass, photography, paintings, jewelry, wood carvings, ceramics, clothing and silk design. Hours: T-F, 10 am – 5 pm, Sat, 10 am – 2 pm. Closed Sunday.
From ArtSpace, you can leave your car and walk to some beautiful shops on the Town Square. Just a block down the road at the corner of North and Main streets is Nitza’s, a women’s clothing shop housed in a gorgeous historical building. Or check out Hofeller, Hiatt & Clark, a fine men’s clothing store. Walk across the street to Alter Ego Comics, filled with comic books, action figures and collectibles. Even non-comic fans will be entertained by the variety of figures available. Continue down Main Street to Dome’s Nut Shop for a variety of candy and nuts. Cross the Main/ Market Street intersection to Natural Vibez, which has an eclectic mix of hand-made, vintage, and fair trade clothing, jewelry and gift items. Stop by Miriam’s Closet next door for some great thrift store finds.
Lunch
With so many great local lunch places to choose from, deciding where to eat will be the toughest part of your day. Kewpee, a local icon with a rich history, serves arguably the best hamburgers and fries in the area. Sal’s Philly Steaks, across from the courthouse, brings the taste of Philly to downtown Lima. Or grab a sub at Joey’s on the Town Square and sit outside to people watch. For a complete list of downtown restaurants, visit downtownlimaohio.com.
Afternoon
After lunch, you might want to take a stroll to the Art Park next to Cullen Art Glass, on the corner of Main and Spring Streets. The art park was created by area students. Take a look at the antiques and stained glass artwork at Cullen Art Glass as well.
Next stop: Allen County Museum. The museum is a hidden gem, and includes the 1893 Victorian MacDonell House, log house, Shay Locomotive display, and a children’s museum. Museum docents will be more than happy to take you personally through the more exotic exhibits, such as the moving Noah’s Ark, or the John Dillinger exhibit (view some photos here). Even if you don’t have kids in tow, stroll through the Children’s museum for some interesting old-time school house displays. The museum is free, although a $5/adult donation is suggested. Hours: T-F, 1-5 pm, Sat-Sun, 1-4 pm. Closed Monday.
Spend some time strolling through the Children’s Garden, right next door to the museum. Not just for kids, the beautiful garden is maintained by volunteer master gardeners, and is a whimsical place that hosts over 30 mini-theme gardens and child-inspired works of art, with historical elements which relate to Allen County’s rich history. Open May through October, dawn to dusk. Free.
Evening
Time to slow down the pace, and enjoy a one-of-a-kind meal by chef Alisa at The Main Street Bistro. Its warm interior and gourmet food and wine will give you a second wind for the night’s entertainment.
Speaking of entertainment… take your pick for the evening. Enjoy a musical or concert at the Civic Center, a community play at Encore Theatre, the celebrated music of the Lima Symphony, or a variety of live music at downtown restaurants and bars, such as The Meeting Place on Market or the Main Street Bistro (see restaurant web sites for schedules).
And if you weren’t able to fit all the fun into one day, stop for a night at the WinGate Inn, a comfortable hotel in the heart of downtown Lima.

Spotlight on Paul Reiser
We were excited to welcome Paul Reiser to The Meeting Place to perform his jazz program last Saturday night. The sounds of smooth jazz emanating from his purple saxophone really warmed the place up! Paul’s tones were rich and full, providing the perfect sound for a jazz melody.
Paul Reiser has been a part of the Lima music scene for 60 years. His first gig was playing for dancing at Lincoln Park in the summer of 1944.
After graduating from Wittenberg University in 1949, He was a charter member in 1953 of the Lima Symphony Orchestra, playing clarinet and bass clarinet in it for 43 years. He also has been a member of the Lima Area Concert Band for over 30 years.

Great Open Mike Night
We had a great open mike night last night, listening to guitar and vocals from Paul Sulpizio from from Defiance. I also enjoyed meeting his wife, Daria.
Paul Sulpizio, pictured above.
We also enjoyed greeting those going through the Lima Lantern Tour. Below is a picture of our meeting room decorated, and ready for the groups to stop by.
The Lima Lantern Tour takes attendees on a walk through downtown Lima, touring some of the older buildings, and narrating chilling stories of times past, including the history of notorious bank robber John Dillinger and his gang, who wreaked havoc in Lima.
Open Mike Night is every Friday night – to sign up, drop by The Meeting Place, or call/email us (419-222-0985/ info@meetingplaceonmarket.com).

Lima Lantern Tours
Friday & Saturday, Oct. 16-17, and Oct 23-24

Downtown Lima Inc. is sponsoring the Lima Lantern Tours. The tours take you through buildings in downtown Lima, while speakers present Lima’s unique “spooky” history. The tours are Friday & Saturday, Oct. 16-17, and Oct 23-24. Weird Ohio author James Willis will be here on October 23 (he might even be visiting the TB hospital). Some of the tours are walking, and some are horse & wagon.
Visit their web site for more info, or to book tickets: http://www.limalanterntour.com/
All the tours sold out last year, so if you’re interested, book early!

A View of the Meeting Place in the Morning
I’m sitting here, enjoying a week off of my full-time job, soaking in the atmosphere at The Meeting Place on Market. It really is a gathering place of diversity, and I love that!
I’m sitting in the area known as the Terrace, at a little round table with two chairs. My laptop is open, I’m plugged into the wall, and enjoying the free wi-fi. To the right of me is a table of three ladies wearing dresses and enjoying conversation with frozen mochas, lattes, and quesadillas. Next to the window sits the pastor of a downtown church, soaking in the sun as he writes.

View from the Terrace – looking at Trinity Methodist Church. Photo by Elaine McCormack.
To my left, in the area called the Pub, for its chess board topped tables and dark interior, sits two friends enjoying conversation over coffee in a comfortable booth. Another booth is taken up by a young man brainstorming over a notebook (since I know him, I’m guessing he’s writing songs). A businessman is sipping his coffee with skim milk while he works diligently on his top-of-the-line laptop. Hopefully he’s not noticing my jealous looks as I type on my dinosaur of a laptop.
In the Dining Room area, with large tables suited for meetings, a table full of young professionals, in casual clothes and carrying portfolios, are talking. I’m not sure what they are discussing, but it looks very interesting.
Our private meeting room is taken up by a pastor couple of another downtown church and their team, whom we enjoy hosting often.
I just tried our new peanut butter flavoring in a mocha – awesome! And of course, I couldn’t do without an “everything” bagel with ranch cream cheese (my fav).
So The Meeting Place on Market is a true gathering place for people of all shapes, colors and sizes. I love the vibrancy such diversity of use allows! What energy exudes in allowing people to be who they are, without the need to fit into a certain stereotype.
“For those who have seen the Earth from space, and for the hundreds and perhaps thousands more who will, the experience most certainly changes your perspective. The things that we share in our world are far more valuable than those which divide us.” – Donald Williams
