The public is invited to an opening night reception for this year’s ‘Adventures in Art’ exhibit at the The Meeting Place, 220 W. Market Street in Lima, on Friday, July 30^th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Lima Adult Day Support program participants will be featuring their artwork at the exhibit.

Local artist Joan Barnes started “Adventures in Art’ in 2006.  She visits the adult day support center once a month and leads an individual or a group art project with the Lima program participants. This year, a dozen participant artists will exhibit their work in the show.

Easter Seals Adult Day Support Program in Lima is a day habilitation program serving adults with developmental disabilities. This program encourages community interaction through on-going community access and participation; maximizes the fullest potential of each individual by building upon their unique skills, talents, and interests; and promotes personal choices through the development of a wide array of meaningful activities and opportunities.

The free art exhibit is open to the public and will run from July 30, 2010 to August 26, at the The Meeting Place, 220 W. Market Street in Lima. Hours are Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

“My name is Ashley R. Kennedy. I am a studio artist entering into my senior year at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne IN. It has been, is, and will always be my passion to create art as well as reveal the unbridled truth to those who need to see it.
Art is for everyone. Every person deserves to be moved and impassioned. Everybody should feel a connection. Art can create empowerment and enlightment and everyone can appreciate that. Like I said art is for everyone.”

“The pieces here examine the capabilities of humanity in mainly two different ways. The first are the graphite pieces. They examine the individual and the secret that they own in a nonjudgmental manner. I believe that everyone has secrets. They are neither good nor bad, but part of what makes us human. This has been displayed here as you, the viewer, are secretly privileged to peer into their vulnerable secrets and simply observe and attempt to not pass judgment. Both the capabilities of human actions and reactions have been reflected upon as we witness what we are capable and incapable of doing. Can you see them in a nonjudgmental manner or is your judgment of them your secret?
The other set is a reflection upon the capability of humanity in reference to destruction. It shows the beautiful things we can destroy because we are either too ignorant to think we have caused any damage or we think we can make it better. Either way the destruction is sadly not recognized until it is too late. We are then left reminiscing and wishing for yester years. In a way these pieces simply want everyone to realize the beauty that which is present and to take ownership for what we have done as well as take action to save what is present for the future. I hope you all can feel a need for hope and change upon lite reflection.”

Elaine McCormack – “I’ve been drawing since I was twelve years old. Over the years, pen and ink, calligraphy and a short stint as an artists at a Hobby Company not only honed by skills, but fueled my desire to broaden my ability to express myself in different media and styles. My first oil was commissioned by a friend who wanted a copy of an original expensive work she liked. More requests followed and I found that by copying other artists, I’m learning to mix colors and find my own style. I’m what I consider a work in progress.”

Ben Collins present’s his sister’s pictures that were inspired from his own photography.

Stephanie Turner – “I’ve always loved painting and taking pictures from a very young age, but my passion is sunrise and sunset photographs. I can never look at one and think it looks the same they are all unique and inspiring. When asked how I could take so many pictures of the same sunset, I reply ‘they aren’t the same, they are all different.’”

Chelsea Ogle – “I took graphic design and photography classes in school, and just kind of fell in love with photography after that.”

H.A. Vonderau lives in Lima, OH and has been an artist for 36 years. He does house and/or people portraits as well as his regular venue. He attended Ft. Wayne Art Institue, Community College of Rhode Island and Rhodes State College. He has done various murals in and around this area, most notably for Honda of America. He teaches drawing classes at Otterbein Assisted Living Homes in Cridersville. He has been featured in various galleries in Rhode Island, Florida and Ohio.

He is a member of The Ohio Art League, Roy G Biv Gallery, Mac Worthington Gallery in Columbus, Ohio and also Artlink in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. His work is currently displayed in Karchelle’s Gallery in Sarasota, FL.

Artist, Architect, John Rausch has long found the spacious, open landscapes of his rural northern Ohio home of Findlay an inspiration and source of constant interest. Wherever his travels lead, the local landscape is subject to an expressionistic, often minimalist interpretation by this painter, photographer. He is President of the Wapakoneta Breakfast Optimist Club, life member of the Riverside Art Center, a member of the American Institute of Architects, and a member of Artspace Lima.

His artwork inspires me because of how beautiful he portrays ordinary, “Ohioan” scenes. Below is one of his paintings, flanked by some of our employees. The photo was taken after our “Extreme Makeover” to the interior of The Meeting Place. See a pictorial gallery of his artwork here.

Coffee Fest kicks off a week long food drive at The Meeting Place. Anyone may drop off donations to the food pantry at The Meeting Place on Market throughout February 13th – February 20th.

Paul Reiser in Concert

Paul Reiser will be playing his smooth jazz at The Meeting Place on Market on Saturday, December 19th. He is a crowd favorite! Come on out and listen – free and open to the public. At 220 West Market Street in downtown Lima, Ohio.

Paul Reiser has been a part of the Lima music scene for 60 years. His first gig was playing for dancing at Lincoln Park in the summer of 1944.
After graduating from Wittenberg University in 1949, He was a charter member in 1953 of the Lima Symphony Orchestra, playing clarinet and bass clarinet in it for 43 years. He also has been a member of the Lima Area Concert Band for over 30 years.
During this period he was also a member of various jazz bands led by Don Hurless, Ray Coleson, Brad Stauffer and the West Ohio Big Band led by Bob Loughrige and based in Celina. He presently plays saxophone in The Tune Toppers, appearing at area nursing homes and county fairs.
For “PURPLE SAXIOKE”, Paul will play a mix of jazz, blues, ballads and soul numbers. He will be playing his purple rose finish saxophone.
